Marseille is in the midst of a cultural renaissance, and you’ll see why on this 4-hour walking tour. The city is the second largest in France and was the European Capital of Culture in 2013. Your adventure begins with a trip to Marseille’s historic center. Stroll along the boutique- and restaurant-filled Old Port as your guide shows you the port’s transformation from a 6th-century trading post to the region’s center of maritime activity in the 19th century. From there, you’ll head to the colonnaded Palais Longchamp at the terminus of the Durance River. Inaugurated in 1869 as a monument commemorating Marseille’s connection to a new network of waterways, the grand fountain-cascade-water tower has two wings that house the city’s Museum of Natural History and Museum of Fine Arts.
Continue to the magnificent Basilica of Notre Dame de la Garde. Situated on the foundations of an ancient fort, this building sits on the highest elevation in the city overlooking Marseille. Consecrated in 1864 to replace an 11th-century church of the same name, the basilica has a lower crypt built in the Romanesque style and an upper church built in the neo-Byzantine style using green limestone from Florence. Snap a photo or two while enjoying stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea. Sign up today for your chance to step back into the history and culture of beautiful Marseille.
